Reds Return – Thailand

Despite being routed on the streets of Bangkok just a few months ago, the Red Shirts have regrouped in the north for yet another battle against the Thai government. Civil War inches ever nearer. “Shall we continue to fight?” shouts one defiant Red Shirt to an angry crowd – “fight!” they cry, as videos of the army’s brutal assault on the Red Shirts in May flicker on a projector. Now the emergency decree has been lifted, the Red Shirts have re-emerged in “Thaksin Town” – birth place of their main backer, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Under the continuing ban on discussion of the ailing King, tensions have been simmering: “Thailand is a stupid country, we cannot say what we are thinking”. Yet the presence of armed guards at the protests in May betrayed the movement’s non-violent image. “Both sides are illiberal and have shown that they have anti-democratic tendencies”. Despite the renewed protests, some hard-line Red Shirts remain in hiding. One woman on the run with a group of leading Red Shirts even alledges that the Thai government has assembled a Death List: “There were incidents we knew of in our circle — people were being hunted down”. Speaking in disguise, one of the men she’s hiding with says more violence is unavoidable: “the end of these problems in Thailand… it’s civil war”. Produced by SBS Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

French riots in US future

It could be argued that the United States started the new age of the protest during the 1960′s, however has the US lost its voice? People in France are taking to the streets rioting in mass protest against the potential new law which would raise the minimum age for retirement. Brian Becker with the ANSWER Coalition predicts next year frustrated Americans may take to the streets to reclaim their rights

John Malkovich – 1985 Eleni Trailer

Based on the autobiographical novel by Nicholas Gage, Eleni traces Gage’s search for the truth behind the execution of his Greek mother Eleni. John Malkovich plays Gage (herein referred to only as Nick), a New York Times journalist assigned to cover a border war in Albania. Intimately familiar with his beat–it’s where he grew up–Nick periodically flashes back to his childhood, and his memories of his late mother Eleni (Kate Nelligan). Not at all concerned with politics, Eleni goes to extreme lengths to shelter her children from the ravages of civil unrest. For attempting to smuggle her kids out of the country, Eleni is arrested and executed. Back in the present, Nick manages to locate local politico Katis (Oliver Cotton), the man who signed Eleni’s death warrant. He wangles his way into Katis’ confidence, then prepares to kill the man–but he’s in for a surprise, and something of an epiphany.

JSO/Crvene beretke

Jedinica za Specijalne Operacije-JSO/Crvene beretke Unit for Special Operations/Red berets Milorad Ulemek Legija The JSO is one of the most secretive Serbian special operations units, placed under the control of the State Security Service (SDB). The unit’s first commander was Franko “Frenki” Simatovic, a veteran of the wars in Croatia and Bosnia, and he is also assumed to have been the Chief of Special Forces of State Security. The direct action element of the SDB was first formed in 1991 under the name Jedinica za posebnu namenu (JPN), and was renamed to Jedinica za Specijalne Operacije (JSO) soon after. Detailed information about the JSO is very hard to come by and verify, but a general picture can be put together using various sources. The JSO is sometimes considered to be a paramilitary force, rather than a government special operations unit, and goes by several nicknames including, “Frenkijevci,” after the commander Franko Simatovic, and the “Red Berets.” They are primarily used for “black” operations, including assassinations and surgical strikes against suspected terrorists. The chain of command that the JSO goes through is unclear, but it has been reported that they answered directly to Milosevic during the conflict in Kosovo. There have been a lot of rumors concerning the JSO, both about their activities and their appearances. Reports have members of the JSO wearing cowboy hats, pigtails, black uniforms, uniforms of the Ministry of Interior and cream-colored
